leaders In Context And The Saf Leader get off Doctrine counselling EssayLeadership have been described as the mental process of influence others, perhaps true to say that drawship have become feature of all culture throughout history. It has certainly been an essential quality in all cultures that have survived and flourished. The objective of this raise is to relieve the discernment of lead in the context of SAF, the SAF leaders competency stick and Framework Behaviour / faculty / Skill approaches. It will then answered on the ideas or issues to which there atomic number 18 two things to be examined over the concept or theory and bring home the baconed by the consideration from lesson 1 to 5.What Is LeadershipWhat leadership means to me and why it matters in Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF)? Leadership is a responsibility to lead a team or organisation in order to carry out the mission or complete the task impressively. As an officer in the armed forces, I essential be able to inspire the people by showing my character, values of existing fields and possess good communication. This ability has been cultivated since the beginning when I joined the organisation. In Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), the context is referred to leader and manager. The two approaches are different, where a leader shag be described as a person who shows the way, urges and goals, and manager is a person who oversees, supervises, engages and administers2. Therefore to be effective in what we do we must have twain scientific disciplines. As a leader must have vision, being able to communicate that vision and convince our people to follow and to take willingly. In addition to that, the core values explain how we as a leaders and managers must act as a role models for our subordinates to follow. It describes how we must behave in order to motivate and guide those for whom we are responsible in RBAF.The SAF Leadership Doctrine (Framework Competency Model)What is remarka ble in the SAF Leadership framework is the order of two main fashions, namely in the form of triangle and circle. SAF has developed extensive and heading towards the didactics of the third Generation SAF. In the second form of the framework explains the pattern of leadership for the desired direction. The singularity of this framework gives pictorial understanding the meaning and thought leadership in the two forms of order. Each form has a framework as a characteristic feature descriptions are summarized as followsIn a circle each leader must emphasize affect people with a good understanding of the mission and objectives, operating environment and the desired results. Triangle provides a framework to determine the need for leaders to effective leadership in the SAF. Benefits of this framework fabricate awareness in performing their duties and responsibilities and know where the weaknesses that needs to be improved. For understanding the context of leadership, the triangle shap e consists of four domains which are values, competencies, styles and self. The form of the circle advise identify the contextual through three domains, namely the mission and objectives, operating environment and desired outcomes3.This framework is not only expanding the list of ingredients for effective leadership, however also emphasized the unique importance. This context called the SAF Leadership 24-7 as shown in Figure 14. Every building blocks affect a leader and go journey through the contacts contained in a circle. Form of this framework can be used to service Tri and also to the inferior and middle managers. Contextual discernment 3 domains have relationship with manifestation of leadership in the SAF. If either one of the domain is failed, then overall will be unsuccessful.Figure 1. SAF Leadership Framework 24-7behavioural / Competency / Skill Approaches to LeadershipThe SAF Leadership Competency Model consists of five competency domains and 14 skills are common to th e SAF5. In the skill domains are divided into 3 levels of leadership of different Behaviours Direct, Organizational and strategic. The style approach emphasises the behaviour of the leaders. Style approach is different from trait and skills approaches because it focuses on what leaders do rather than are. There are two primary behaviours which are task behaviours and relationship behaviours. The task behaviours facilitate goal accomplishment or chance on the objectives. Relationship behaviours wait on subordinates feel comfortable with themselves, with each other and the situation. The central focus is how leaders combined these two behaviours. Blake Mouton developed a model that described leadership behaviours on a managerial or leadership grid. The basic tenet is that based on concern for production and concern for people, the leadership style will fall into one of the 4 quadrants6.By understanding the behaviour that lead style can be seen how you play the role as a leader. The main focus is what leaders do and how they act. As shown in Figure 2, the managerial behaviour is the preferred style area to operate which is both concern for people and results, and it also depend the area of environment you operate. However, this style is soft, but production will run smoothly. The behaviour approach required a great depth of understanding to study linkage to leadership.Figure 2. The Leadership Grid7What are the difference concepts surrounded by leadership and management? The terms leadership and management are distinguish differently by various people. The biggest difference between managers and leaders is the way they inspire the people who work or follow them. Back to the definition, leadership is a process whereby an individual influences a group of individuals to achieve a common goal, whereas management is to exercise managerial, administrative and supervisory direction of a group or organization8. Leadership and management share many similarities. Both le adership and management involve influence, working with people, and working with effective goal management. However, the fields of leadership and management can also be considered very different. To distinguish between leadership and management, a comparison between leadership and management activities is shown in Figure 3. An individual can be a great leader, a great manager, or both, but each area requires the controller of slightly different skills and competencies.LEADERSHIPMANAGEMENTKEY THEORISTSSeeking order and stabilitySeeking adaptive and constructive changeKotter (1990)Do the right thingsDo things rightBennis Nanus (1985)Multidirectional relationshipDevelop mutual purposeUnidirectional relationshipCoordinating activitiesRost (1991)Source Northouse, 2007, p. 9-10Figure 3. Comparison Function of Leadership and ManagementAlthough there is a clear distinction between management and leadership, two roles are overlapping. Take for example, Ship CO lead the command of the ship fo r patrol with his crews. When CO takes charge on planning and controlling, he is involved in management. When CO became manager in influencing the ships crew to achieve their task, he is involved in leadership. Both processes affect the ships crew to achieve the task. Overall, this is depends on the tasking given where the CO can take more leadership and less management or vice-versa.Do I want more leadership/management oriented responsibilities?Again taking an example as Ship CO where his leadership may pull up stakes depending on his task and works with his crew. His management function will demand more as to look after the men including the ship so ship organisation will run efficiently. As shown in Figure 3 above, management is close desire order and stability leadership is about seeking adaptive and constructive9. When there is more leadership responsibilities, it required time and concentration of effort for Ship CO that will affect changes on his crew.My attitude and weak nessBy understanding the leadership in context, more in-depth thought to show that there are weaknesses in my area of leadership. In lesson 1 to 5, can be make a distinction whether my leadership style and leadership effectiveness for this has been achieved or need to be developed. As shown in the diagram on Figure 1 above, the leadership competency framework model, generally through this form of triangle and circle guidance can establish from one of 4 building blocks. The understanding of military leadership and the difference between management, leadership and command give an overview and their relationship to my reproof. During this course, the main focus is to look and think into my ain Mastery and Self. On top of that, the 5 competency domains and 14 skill domains can be taken as education knowledge. The MBTI tool is described about the preferences to distinguish my type of personality whether the function of judging (thinking and feeling) and perceiving functions (sensing I ntuition). My profile obtained was based on ENTJ (Direct Decide), strength of character that helped me through character Extraversion and Thinking. However, to assist on my weakness parts, I need to look into Introversion which several of this type should appreciate deep thinking methodology and understanding the logic.Meanwhile, IDAP methods provide important feedback to guide me towards achieving the desired direction. From short to long term goal that measure my success. Strength and weakness of the evidence provided will develop and improve my weakness area with the help of coaching method. Interviews were conducted with the Directing Staff to evaluate my IDAP. To achieve my goal is to do a reflection on my strength and weakness and taking the feedback positively.ConclusionThe essay has explained on my understanding on leadership in context and the important of it in relation to RBAF. The SAF Leadership Framework competency which has a unique to SAF and the Behavioural / Compe tency / Skill approaches to leadership give more thought on style approach and competency domain which is common to SAF. To elaborate further, it discussed the difference between leadership and management and their responsibilities. As a manager and a leader both roles are significant by having their style approach towards the task. Overall my reflection on the lesson 1 5, has significantly open my awareness especially the tools (MBTI and IDAP) which will further improve my leadership knowledge during this course.

Differences Between Old And New Terrorism Criminology Essay

Differences Between Old And New Terrorism Criminology EssayTerrorism is not a sassy concept, and despite it was use very often everyplace the past decade, it remains one of the most difficult issues to define. Its ambiguity comes from the different connotations that the terminus has gained everywhere history. James D. Kiras points out that, although the definitions of terrorist exercise vary widely, the all come from a common point act of terrorism is a tactic characterized basically by the use of violence and the spread of concern it can take many an opposite(prenominal) forms and often indiscriminately targets non-combatants. The starting points for the most disagreements about terrorism are the purposes for which violence is used, and its root causes (Kiras 2008 372). According to Professor disco biscuit Roberts, the term terrorism historically entered into European languages during the French revolution of 1789, when violence was used by the governments in Paris to impos e their new smart set on a reluctant citizenry. Therefore, as recorded by the Acadmie Franaise, the first meaning of the word terrorism was system of rule of terror (Roberts 2002). However, over the last decades the term terrorism has been used to define the recourse to violence by small groups to achieve political change. This has included ideological, ethnic, and religious exclusion or persecution (Kiras 2008). Terrorism has changed over time, and after 9/11 events, specialists in sociology, policy makers, scholars and the mass media have been widely using the term new terrorism. Therefore, David Tucker states that This terrorism is reputedly secernate from the old by a new structure, a new kind of personnel, and a new attitude toward violence. (Tucker 2001 1).Furthermore, according to Professor Martha Crenshaw, in order to consider the differences between old and new terrorism, three key aspects should be debated goals, methods, and system of rules. Therefore, the new terrori sm can be justified on a religious background, and the new terrorist groups considered having ambiguous goals on the systemic level and to value destruction for its own sake. On the other side, the old terrorism is more comprehensible, limited and more specific, with its root in political ideology (Crenshaw 2005). The old terrorism was regarded as being a political weapon, designed to produce chaos with the strategic purpose of, either to maintain a regime, or to require the conditions for a new one. Michael Stohls study shows that the violence of the terrorist acts is not intended simply to destroy but to be heard, and indeed terror is a message of strength, a warning designed to intimidate, to ensure compliance without the need to physically touch citizen the more extensive is the message, the more in(predicate) is the act. (Stohl 1988 5). Stohl points out that the old terrorist groups chose their victims and targets with care, in order to achieve maximum chance of success, e ven if that often meant to target non-combatants or mass innocent victims. An example of terrorist act which has had an important impact on the history was the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand by a 19-year-old Bosnian Serb student, Gavril Princip, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914 (Roberts 2002). Another purpose was to create or enforce obedience, either of the population at large or within the ruling party, in order to ensure greater future hesitancy to assist the opposing side and greater obedience to the wishes of the insurgent cause or the security forces. This type of terror was put into effect during the revolutionary movements and in revolutionary regimes to create obedience within the ruling elites, to demonstrate their vulnerability and weakness, and force policy change. This occurred during the French revolution in 1789 and in Peru, when Sendero Luminoso unsanctified establishment sought to destroy the existing social and political order in order to create a Ma oist regime (Stohl 1988).The new terrorism, although is not so new, has changed its purposes over the decades. According to Martha Crenshaw, the new terrorists religious point of view is related to the pursuit of mass casualties. Because their goals are religious, the new terrorists seek to kill as many people as possible (Crenshaw 2006). Very often associated with Islamic terrorists, nowadays the terrorist groups have widely developed in the fields of transport, communications and weaponry, due to the commodious process of ball-shapedization. Therefore, they produce greater violence and climate of fear, in easier ways and with a lower level of risk. In the present, the most debated and feared terrorist network is the Islamic organization Al-Qaeda led by Osama bin Laden. According to Global Security, it wasestablished around 1988 by bin Laden. In 1998, Al-Qaeda issued a statement under banner of The World Islamic Front for Jihad against the Jews and Crusaders saying it was the du ty of all Muslims to kill US citizens-civilian or military-and their allies everywhere. In consequence, on 9/11, 2001 a series of suicide attackers, members of Al-Qaeda hijacked four commercial airplanes, two of them crashing into theWorld Trade Centrein New York City, the third one into thePentagon, and the 4th plane, crashing into a field, after being redirected to Washington D.C. (Global Security 2006). Therefore, if the old terrorism could be resembled more with a form of guerrilla warfare, the new terrorism, become orbicular war, representing a much greater danger. Moreover, in order to analyse the different methods used by the old and new terrorists, Martha Crenshaw divides them in two different categories secular terrorists and jihad terrorists. In the secular terrorism case the violence is said to be carefully calibrated, going just far enough to achieve their objectives. age they could have killed more people, they stick to their political objectives and chose not to, bec ause indiscriminate killing would not produce success. Therefore, BrianJenkins states that terrorists seem to be more interested in having a lot of people watching, not a lot of people dead (Jenkins 1988). Although the number of their attacks achieved a great number, no attack in the preceding age was as destructive as the catastrophe of 9/11. Still there were a number of incidents that produced well over a hundred casualties, as the midair battery of Pan Am 103, attributed to Libyan agents, or Air India, attributed to Sikh extremists who wanted an independent Punjab. In Crenshaws opinion the jihad terrorists are lead by worship to seek mass causalities. Their attacks are more lethal and they have strategic targets. After the attacks in the United States, a series of other bombing occurred in Bali, Madrid and London, spreading fear not only on the American continent, but all over the world (Crenshaw 2006). Among examples of the new terrorism, Aum Shinrikyos attack on the capital of Japan subway is the only example of use of chemical weapons (Crenshaw 2003).On the other hand, the organization is widely different between old and new terrorism. As say by Crewnshaw the new terrorists are often described as a network rather than an organization. By contrast, the old terrorists organization is thought to have been class-conscious and centralized. The new terrorism is said to be horizontal and flat, whereas the old terrorism is vertical and pyramidal. The West German terrorists of the 70s and 80s were not tightly structured as they search to be. They were composed of small different groups with shifting political objectives. Neither did the anarchists in the 19th century, who were certainly not a centralised organisation (Crenshaw 2006). Moreover, jihad terrorism appears to be more organizes that any other terrorist network. According to Kenneth Katzmans study, Al-Qaeda is a very well structured organisation. Also it collaborates with a range number of other te rrorist groups. These are either in partnership with Al Qaeda or on their own, attempting to destabilize established regimes in the region. These include the Islamic Army of Aden (Yemen) and Hizb-e-Islam/Gulbuddin) (Katzman 2005).Moreover, another(prenominal) crucial difference between old and new terrorism is the massive use of high technology of the new terrorism groups. As indicated by antic Arquilla, David Ronfeldt, and Michele Zanini terrorists are likely to increasingly use advanced information technologies for offensive and defensive purposes, as well as to support their organizational structures (Arquilla et al. n.d.). Moreover, according to Kiras elements of globalisation that permits the rapid exchange of ideas and good can also be leveraged and exploited by terrorist groups. The technologies associated with globalization allow terrorists to operate in a highly distributed global network that shares information and allows small cells to conduct highly coordinated, lethal attacks. Also, globalization may allow some terrorist groups to acquire, manufacture, and use weapons of mass destruction in order to conduct catastrophic attacks (Kiras 2008).To conclude, as stated by Tucker, although the networked, ad hoc character of contemporary terrorism is not new, the terrorism we experience today, at least the global terrorism, is more lethal than it was when it first emerged three decades ago and more likely to produce mass casualties (Tucker 2001). Thus, according to Crenshaw the difference between the new and the old terrorism is not as fundamental as proponents of the new terrorism view would have it. The differences among groups and over time do exist, but they are due to the changing environment, in particular the globalization (Crenshaw 2003). The new terrorism has become seriously dangerous since the 11 September 2001 attacks, which have shaped much of the history of the geezerhood since. As Grant Wardlaws study shows, it is seems likely that ter rorism will be a more serious problem towards the end of the century than is currently. The present analysts commit that the incremental changes in the nature of terrorism and terrorist groups will eventually lead some group to attempt mass destruction terrorism. Also, the changes in political socialising which have occurred worldwide over the past few decades, together with easier access to powerful weapons, suggest the possibility that terrorism may be come to be seen by a wider range of groups as an acceptable way to stop governments operation in ways that group members see as inimical to their interest. (Wardlaw 1989) Although it changes over the decades, terrorism remains a complex phenomen in which violence is used to obtain political power. The new terrorism presents a great danger as globalization has improved the technical capabilities of terrorists and given them global reach. In other words, globalization changed the scope and the nature of the old terrorism (Kiras 2008 ).

The scotch grimaces and its consideration in that regard as far as activities encompassing the hospitality industry thus are flawless and immeasurable as far and growth factor is concerned and the economic aspects in that regard. But often we wonder as to what defines the h otel industry or let say, hospitality industry for that matter? In oecumenic hotel industry is a broad category and includes the service industry at large covering the category of lodging, restaurant, recreation and many more. The hospitality industry on a world-wide scale is a huge. There is high instance of economic activities going on within the planetary hospitality industry. Due to the growth in tourism, recreational services and lodging as well as food chains and increasing number of restaurants, the orbicular domain of hospitality industry present a huge economic avenue for all kinds of opportunities, be it investment, financing or the factor which also cods the construction sector in the economy of the world. Above all, body of work opportunities also are huge in the hotel industry on a worldwide scale. (Economy-Watch) There is no doubt in that regard, since the hotel industry encompasses all possesss of the service sector.Summing it all up and when we focus our atten tion to the hotel/hospitality industry in UAE also we incur that there are many interesting details to question about, especially the growth component of UAE hospitality industry in the current schemes of things.Literature ReviewFirst and foremost it should be understood that the very fancy of hotel industry in general is a playground of huge economic activities. As we can observe, international industry presents a refined form of globalization and its influence in almost all sector and industries. The significant part is that globalization has opened up an avenue and numerous opportunities for hotel industry to reap the benefit from.Global Hospitality IndustryHospitality to be correct is much broader in scope. Some people do film a misplaced sympathy as to what is hospitality industry. The general perception of hospitality means the realms of hotel and restaurant. This is not wrong or incorrect to be precise, however, hospitality industry and its scope is broader and includes a ll features of entertainment and otherwise aspects that amount towards serving guest and reception of visitors with liberty and good will. (Clayton W. Barrows, 2008 , p. 4) According to scholars and observers, they are of the opinion that the global hospitality industry is bound for a study boom and growth, due to increase internationalization of businesses and the worldwide presence of variety of services in the backdrop of globalization and its impact. An economic aspect that covers the range of activities within the hotel industry also is garnering steam. (Yu, 1999 , p. 3) In the current scheme of things it is said by experts that the global hospitality industry is on a growth path. Demands in the industry as far as service components encompassing hotel industry also is huge, which further boost the growth element to the point that come across the demand seems to pose many issue when viewed from a business perspective and as far as operation goes. (ErnstYoung, 2011)Nonetheless , it also should be understood that hospitality is the very important component of the service industry in any of the country national economy. (Yu, 1999 , p. 4) Speaking of the hotel industry, it should also be understood that the components which feature the hotel industry can be classified and divided into two main segments, namely (i) Entertainment area (ii) Accommodation and Lodging. (Economy-Watch)Entertainment Areas in the Entertainment Area, the hospitality services includes, clubs, bars, restaurants, casinos, and other forms of entertainment such as event planning and the likes, which are some event mentioned herein. (Economy-Watch)Accommodation and Lodging On a larger rail line though, Accommodation and Lodging area of the hotel industry includes houses for rent, hotel accommodation, resorts, serviced apartments and also extend its range to motels, which are a factor of attraction for traveler due to the cost factor and comfy accommodation on a first come, first serve ba sis. (Economy-Watch)Apart from these and within the components of the hotel industry in the global scale, the very object of tourism also finds a pale of consideration. The grammatical construction of tourism and its components to a great extent defines the very object of hospitality industry. What is all about tourism and is feature can be measured within the realms of its components that includes providing tourist with comfy accommodation when it comes to their stay be it hotel, motel, lodges, guest houses furnished apartments or any other hospitality services. (Andrews, 2007 , p. 30) For this very reason we see as to why the tourism sector at most instance are in tie up with major hotels and accommodation providers and also with tour and traveler providers and thus boosting the growth of global tourism. Above all, it should not be forgotten that the hospitality industry is a huge employer, when compared and contrasted in context of the industry at large. Employment opportunities in the backdrop of booming global tourism and increasing and mush rooming international business provide a huge avenue for fresh graduate and those who are specially trained in the hospitality management aspects.Hospitality Industry in UAEAccording to explanations, it states that the hotel industry in UAE and in particular to its Trucial state Dubai is very competitive. Abraham Lincoln Essay -- essays papers

Abraham LincolnIn Abraham Lincoln The Man Behind the Myths, Stephen Oates interpretation of the historical Lincoln had three examples of Lincolns actions Moral decisions, his expression and progression. The first illustration that I see is his beliefs in moral determination. He not further believed that ethically slavery was wrong, but also believed that he could do something about it. One way that he tried to change peoples mind was to pass the license Proclamation Act. The proclamation declared that all persons held as slaves within the rebellious states are, and henceforward shall be drop off. Even though this Proclamation did not immediately free a single slave, Lincoln believed that it was a start in ending slavery. Lincoln contended in any case that blacks who had tasted freedom would never consent to be slaves again (p.115). He believed that once the blacks or slaves had a chance at freedom, Lincoln knew that they would never go back to being toughened unequally. Lin coln was not much more than the simple saint, he was just an abolitionist. He was determined to stand by his word. He was willing to do anything and everything to work over his beliefs out. Another action that I choose to illustrate his ways was his expressions. Lincoln felt so strongly about the Union that he expressed that the slaves were a tremendous source of strength (p. 105). Depictions of gender roles in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter

In Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet garner, Hester Prynne is virtually banished from the puritan society because of her crime. She was guilty for adultery with the towns minister, Arthur Dimmesdale. However, the reader is kept in the dark that Dimmesdale is the childs father until latter part of the novel. Although Hawthornes novel accurately depicts the consequences that Hester and Dimmesdale suffer from their sin, the novel does not accomplish the task of reflecting upon the 17th century Puritan gender roles in Hester and Dimmesdale. For one, the mental and physical states of Hester and Dimmesdale are switched. Hester takes on the more courageous role end-to-end the novel whereas Dimmesdale takes on the more sensitive role. In addition, Hester is examined in accordance to the gender roles set for todays American women. Nathaniel Hawthornes The Scarlet Letter is written in a manner that accurately depicts 17th century Puritan society, but does not accurately show gender ro les. To begin, typical Puritan society during the 17th century was painfully stern and somber it was founded on the strictest, unmollified Calvinism, (Puritan). In other words, their society was very restricted and confined to religion. Civil impartiality also played a role in the citizens business and social relations. Law impacted how they dressed, their religious affairs, and even their family relations. In terms of education, Puritans prospered. In fact, in Massachusetts, they required every township of fifty families to employ a teacher to educate the children. Their government was also structured upon religion because religion served as their whole method of life. In terms of gender roles, the men were responsible for earning bread for... ... Letter.
